Where to Stay for a Valparaíso Wine Tour: the Hills or Viña del Mar?
Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción, Viña del Mar's seafront, or a Santiago hotel for the tour pickups: which base suits a Casablanca wine day, and what each is like.
For character, stay on Cerro Alegre or Cerro Concepción, the two hills at the heart of Valparaíso’s UNESCO-listed historic quarter; for beaches, flat streets and big hotels, stay in Viña del Mar, next door. If your wine tour leaves from Santiago, as most do, the simplest plan is a Santiago hotel the night before and the coast afterwards. Most Casablanca tours collect from central Santiago, Providencia, Las Condes and Vitacura, and only a few pick up on the coast.

Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción: the hills
These are the hills the wine tours walk you through: steep lanes of painted houses, murals, viewpoints over the bay and the funiculars that link them to the flat lower town, El Plan. The historic quarter of Valparaíso was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003, and the two hills hold most of its small hotels in restored houses, its cafés and its best-known restaurants. Stay here if you want to step out of the door into the city you came to see, and to be there in the evening, when the day-trippers have gone and the lights come on across the bay.
The trade-offs are the hills themselves (stairs and steep streets, hard with heavy luggage) and the usual city care after dark: stick to the main lanes, take a taxi or an app ride back up the hill late at night, and keep your phone out of sight on quiet staircases.

Viña del Mar: the beach next door
Viña del Mar, the “Garden City”, runs straight on from Valparaíso along the bay to the north: flat streets, parks, the Flower Clock, a long seafront with beaches, and larger modern hotels. It is about 15 to 30 minutes from Valparaíso by the local train or bus. Stay here if you want a beach holiday with a wine day in it, a hotel with a pool, or easy walking. It has less of the old port’s atmosphere, and the busiest beaches fill up in January and February, the Chilean summer holidays.
Santiago: for the tour pickups
If you only have a day for the coast, stay in Santiago and let the tour do the driving. The pickup areas the tours list are central Santiago, Providencia, Las Condes and Vitacura; Providencia is the easy middle ground, with a metro line and plenty of hotels. A hotel or Airbnb on a main street makes the early pickup simpler.

In the valley itself
The town of Casablanca is a small farming town on the highway, and the choice of places to stay around it is small compared with the coast. If you want to wake up among the vines, search around the town and check how far each place is from the estates you plan to visit.

How cold does it get in Valparaíso?
Mild all year. Summer highs, in January and February, are around 20 °C on the coast, cooler than Santiago, and the nights are fresh; winter highs, in June to August, are around 15 °C, and June and July bring most of the year’s rain. Pack a layer even in summer: the sea breeze that makes Casablanca good for white wine also cools the coast in the evening.
